Manu National Park – Cultural Zone

FOREWORD

Comprised in the Manu Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO Humankind Natural Heritage site since 1987, the park’s vast animal and plant diversity thrive in the site’s more than 1.76 million hectares ranging from high Andean to tropical rainforest ecosystems where trees tower above 45 meters / 146 feet.

ITINERARY

DAY 1:   CUSCO – CLOUD FOREST- PILCOPATA. 

We will leave from Cusco in our comfortable bus and travel to Paucartambo, a very beautiful Colonial Town where we will spend some time. On the way we visit the funeral towers ( chullpas) of Ninamarca.  Then the bus will ascend up to the Accanaju pass (10,000. Feet) and then descend through a mysterious cloud forest full of beautiful orchids, heliconias and primitive ferns. We will stop to give you an opportunity to witness the mating ritual of the Cock of the Rocks (Rupicola Peruviana). There are also opportunities to observe the Amazonian Umbrella bird (Cephalopteros Ornatus), Trogons (Trogon sp.) and many more. With luck we will see the only South American bear, the Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus).   In the evening we will arrive in Pilcopata and stay in a typical lodge.  There are showers and toilets available.

DAY 2:  PILCOPATA – ATALAYA – PAITITI LODGE. 
After a delicious breakfast in the morning the bus transfers us to the port of Atalaya. The rest of the day is spent traveling on the Alto Madre de Dios River.  On the way you can see a variety of bird life, like herons, egrets, kingfishers, and the ever present vultures, one of which is the spectacular condor of the jungle, King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa).  In the afternoon we will walk trails to explore the area around the Paititi lodge.  We will spend the night in the Paititi Lodge.  There are showers and toilets available.

DAY 3:  PARROT CLAY LICK – LAKE MACHUHUASI –Paititi Lodge. 
Very early in the morning we will take a boat for approximately 30 minutes to the Parrot Clay Lick.   We will observe the Green Parrots, Macaws and also other species of birds and animals.  We will then walk to explore the trails and the lake.  We will continue to observe the flora such as orchids, bromeliads and ferns which are special to the area.  We will also observe turtles, frogs, brown capuchin monkeys and along the river we can observe white Caimans and Capybaras (hidroacheris).   We will spend the night in the Paititi Lodge.  There are Showers and Toilet available.

DAY 4:  PAITITI LODGE – ATALAYA – CUSCO. 
After a delicious breakfast we will unfortunately have to travel back to the port by boat.  Then we will take the bus back to Cusco and to the hotel. We will be arriving at 18:00hrs. approximately.
